Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does the receiver need to pay for anything? Can the shipper pay for any duties and taxes incurred?
Depending on the shipment, there could be duties and taxes that must be paid by the receiver at the destination, and not by the shipper, as per local regulations.

  • Does DHL inspect shipments?
Yes, DHL has the right to open and inspect shipments, as per the Terms of Carriage. This can be done without notice under Customs and other regulatory guidance to promote safety and security.

  • How long will it take to get my shipment delivered? Is my shipment guaranteed?
DHL Express is known for having the fastest transit times in the industry – but this is dependent on the destination country and its local Customs processes. DHL Express U.S. does have a Money Back Guarantee based on the service selected. For more on our guarantee, click here.

  • What is dimensional weight and why is that charged?
The cost of a shipment can be affected by the amount of space it occupies on an aircraft – its volumetric (or dimensional) weight – rather than its actual weight. The volumetric divisor is 139 for in./lb. (5,000 for cm./kg.) and applies to DHL Express Same Day, Time Definite and Day Definite services.

  • Is there any promotional code I can use?
Yes, as a participant in the AFS Program in the United States, we have a special offer exclusively for you. When you ship online or through a DHL Service Point and use the Promo Code DHLAFS50, you will receive a 50% discount on all your international shipments until July 31st, 2025.

If you are shipping from a DHL Service Point location:

  • What documentation do I need to bring in order to send or collect a shipment?
You should bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Also, if you are sending a shipment of value (non-documents) you'll need to bring proof of its value, as well as any other documents mentioned here.

  • Can I use my own packaging?
Yes, you may use your own packaging to pre-pack your shipment, but please be sure to leave it unsealed for inspection.

  • Can I ship medication? What about shipping lithium batteries or other restricted/prohibited commodities?
Certain types of medications may be shipped to specific countries. An agent at the DHL Express ServicePoint will be able to help you determine whether any action is required depending on your destination country. For more information, here. While in some instances you may ship many types of electronics (cell phones, etc.) that contain lithium batteries, there are restrictions.
